COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL HUMAN RIGHTS CLINIC CONGRATULATES MIGRANT JUSTICE AND BEN & JERRY’S ON HISTORIC HUMAN RIGHTS AGREEMENT
On Tuesday, October 3, 2017, ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s and farmworker rights group Migrant Justice, signed the “Milk with Dignity” agreement, formally launching a worker-driven human rights program for Ben & Jerry’s dairy supply chain.
Through the Program, Ben & Jerry’s will pay a premium to farm owners who meet the human rights standards of a farmworker authored and monitored code of conduct. The Milk with Dignity Standards Council, a third party monitor, will receive, investigate, and resolve farmworker complaints, and conduct periodic audits of conditions on farms to ensure compliance with the code.
“The agreement marks a momentous advancement for human rights in the dairy industry in Vermont, and for the model of ‘worker-driven social responsibility,’” said JoAnn Kamuf Ward, Director, Human Rights in the U.S. Project at Columbia Law School.
The Columbia Law School Human Rights Clinic previously drafted and joined a June 2017 letter to Ben & Jerry’s endorsing the key components of the Milk with Dignity Program. “We look forward to continuing to support the innovative efforts to advance the human rights of workers in the Vermont dairy industry,” said Rachel Fleig-Goldstein, a law student in the Human Rights Clinic.

LA CLINICA DE DERECHOS HUMANOS DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE COLUMBIA EN NUEVA YORK FELICITA A JUSTICIA MIGRANTE Y A BEN & JERRY’S POR ACUERDO HISTÓRICO
El 3 de octubre 2017, el fabricante y vendedor de helados, Ben & Jerry’s, y la organización de derechos de trabajadores migrantes, Justicia Migrante, firmaron el acuerdo “Leche con Dignidad”, arrancando un nuevo programa de derechos humanos con Ben & Jerry’s y su cadena de producción, manejado por los trabajadores.
A través del Programa, Ben & Jerry’s pagará un bono a fincas de lecha que cumplen con las normas de derechos humanos establecido en el Código de Conducta redactado por los trabajadores. Un ente monitor independiente, recibirá, investigará y resolverá quejas planteadas por los trabajadores en cuanto al cumplimiento del Código de Conducta. Además, llevará a cabo revisiones periódicas sobre las condiciones de las fincas para asegurar conformidad con el Código.
“Este acuerdo marca un avance monumental para los derechos humanos en la industria lechera de Vermont y para el modelo de responsabilidad social impulsado por trabajadores,” dijo JoAnn Kamuf Ward, Directora de del Proyecto de Derechos Humanos en los EUA en la Facultad de Derecho de Columiba.
La Clínica de Derechos Humanos de la Facultad de Derecho de Columbia redactó y se unió a una carta de organizaciones de derechos humanos presentada a Ben & Jerry’s en junio 2017 respaldando los puntos claves del programa Leche con Dignidad. “Estamos animados para seguir apoyando los esfuerzos innovadores para avanzar los derechos humanos de trabajadores en la industria lechera en Vermont”, dijo Rachel Fleig-Goldstein, estudiante de la Clínica de Derechos Humanos.
